    General Purpose of Job: To inspire and prepare all students with the confidence, courage, and competence to achieve their dreams; contribute to community; and engage in a lifetime of learning. 
      
    Responsibilities: Position provides instruction and support in the curriculum areas for which employed; make appropriate use of instructional resources and technologies. Implement the goals and objectives of the District and the school and/or program for which employed. Maintain contact and communications with parents of students and work with them in the development of each student. The instructor will design, deliver and assess curriculum according to the district guidelines. The teacher must be willing to participate in building leadership activities and be a team player.


    Required Qualifications: Valid Minnesota teaching license in appropriate field.

    Full-time elementary Spanish immersion teaching position beginning the 2012-13 school year. This position may be available for grades 1, 2, or 3. This position may require teaching for half day in Spanish and a half day in English (literacy), or a full day in Spanish, split between two classrooms. Minnesota Elementary K-6 or 1-6 teaching license. Ability to demonstrate native, or near native, fluency in Spanish and English languages through a formal testing process; successful experience in an immersion program preferred; candidate should show evidence of successful experiences with children in primary grades including differentiation of instruction and strong student and parent relationships.     Part-time (.67 FTE) Chinese World Language teaching position at the secondary level, grades 8-12 beginning the 2012-2013 school year.  Minnesota K-12 Chinese World Language teaching license or the ability to obtain a waiver license; oral and written fluency in Mandarin Chinese; experience teaching U.S. students preferably at the secondary level; flexibility and willingness to help design and lead a new Chinese program; demonstrated classroom management skills and ability to engage secondary students in learning Chinese for the first time in an enjoyable class.  This position requires the teacher to have the ability to engage secondary students in beginning level Chinese instruction using technology, innovative curriculum and hands-on instruction. Ideal candidate will be bilingual and bi-literate in both Mandarin Chinese and English and have some experience with students at the secondary level.     The Blake School seeks to hire a PK-12 Modern and Classical Languages (MCL) Department Chair.  The ideal candidate has experience teaching at multiple divisions, experience in administration and a passion for sharing best practice pedagogy in the field.  Department Chairs work closely with Division Directors and report directly to the Assistant Head of School.  

    The Modern and Classical Languages Department Chair will…

    • Collaborate with department members to articulate the shared vision consistent with Blake’s mission, to oversee the mapping and alignment of the MCL curriculum 4-12, and to assess the overall program; 
    • Oversee student placement in courses for students moving between Middle School and Upper School, as well as for those new to Blake or seeking to accelerate; this includes developing and coordinating proficiency-based placement testing.
    • Promote professional development, including summer opportunities, for all who teach in the MCL department so that each teacher can effectively implement a wide range of best-practice instructional and assessment strategies consistent with a proficiency-based approach to language instruction;
    • Coordinate the department’s efforts to increase interest and retention in MCL courses;
    • Work closely with department members to develop and coordinate international experiences for students, including both summer immersion experiences and sister school exchanges, as well as local cultural opportunities;
    • Serve on the Academic Affairs Committee and work closely with administrative colleagues to determine the appropriate role for language instruction in the Lower School and to determine the appropriate slate of second language offerings;
    • Collaborate closely with administrators on hiring, retention, professional growth and evaluation of faculty in the department;
    • Communicate with parents and the wider community about the department’s philosophy, vision, offerings, measures of success, challenges, etc.;
    • Be present on each campus each week, getting to know department colleagues individually and attending department and divisional meetings, as appropriate and realistic;
    • Teach the equivalent of two courses;
    • Oversee department budgets.
